The Most Exciting Islands On The Croatian Coast

Although Croatia is a land of innumerable spectacles, the islands of Croatia are some of the most alluring parts of the country. Like shimmering sequins on the blue carpet of the Adriatic Sea, these islands display the most spellbinding treasures of Croatia. Each island sings the tales of its history in the form of the magnificent architecture of the ancient buildings, quaint churches, and rustic houses. Despite moving with the times, these tiny kingdoms have preserved their pristine greenery and the fascinating relics of the local culture. Distinctly different from each other yet equally mesmerizing, here are some of the most beautiful islands of Croatia that you must set foot on at least once in your life.

Brac Island

The most striking feature of the island of Brac is the horn-shaped beach of Zlatni Rat. A golden sword that impales the Adriatic waters, this beach is frequented by sunbathers and windsurfers throughout the year. You can hike to the Dragon’s Cave that displays intriguing carvings of angels and mythical symbols, or can head northwards to the Museum of Olive Oil in Skrip. The town of Supetar contains a breathtaking beach and a cemetery replete with marvelous stone sculptures, while the rocky slopes of Vidova Gora are perfect for mountain biking. Brac is a colorful cocktail of historical and natural wonders, and the limestone houses add a white glow to this fusion.

Hvar Island

The island of Hvar is known as one of the best party destinations in Croatia, thanks to its famous nightlife and gorgeous beaches. However, there are several other activities that will keep you occupied during the daytime as well. This island is covered with lavender fields, olive plantations, and vineyards that offer an opportunity to take a break from the urban life. Several medieval monuments adorn the landscape, such as the St. Stephen’s Cathedral in the heart of the town and the Fortica that looms over the city from its elevated position atop a hill. Also, the enthusiasts for yachtcharter in Croatia will be pleased to know that ports of Hvar are some of the most popular hotspots for this type of activity. The brilliant sunshine and the pleasantly warm weather will make you want to stay on this island forever.

Korcula Island

If you are seeking quieter shores then Korcula Island is the best bet for you. This densely vegetated island is relatively less crowded and emanates an old world charm. The tiny villages look like postcards from the yesteryears, with their narrow streets and serene atmosphere. The museums in Korcula Town offer a glimpse of this region’s history while the towers and city walls of this town are the remnants of the ancient fortifications. There are some sandy beaches and secluded coves along the southern edge of the island while the northern coastline is pebbly. The dark pine forests that gave Korcula the moniker of Black Island offer a mystical appeal to the scenery.

Cres Island

The island of Cres is sparsely populated and a large part of the terrain is occupied by prehistoric forests. The churches of this region, such as the St. Mary of the Snow Church and the Church of the Assumption, have intricately designed altars in Renaissance and Baroque styles. The Osor Archaeological Collection exhibits sculptures from the medieval ages while the Cres Museum displays Venetian architecture from the 16th century. The main town square called Trg Frane Petrica is the best place to witness the local culture of the island, with its vibrant fruit and vegetable markets. The arts center at Ruta is also worth a visit, to appreciate the craftsmanship of the local population.

Each of these amazing islands has a unique personality and offers an entirely different experience to the travelers. These islands hold something for everyone, whether you are an aficionado of culture or a lover of nature. Each street reveals a new aspect of the magical land of Croatia and will make you fall even more in love with this wonderful country.
